Articles for the Slave Ship Sally

Full description
Transcription of articles for the slave ship Sally, 1764, listing the names, duties, and wages of each crewman. Esek Hopkins, the brig’s master, was promised £50 per month, plus a “privilege” — a commission — of ten barrels of rum and ten enslaved Africans to sell on his own account. The crew included one “Negro boy,” Edward Abbie, understood to be Hopkins’s indentured servant. From the Brown Family Business Records collection at the John Carter Brown Library at Brown University.
