Page spread from The Marble Faun
Full description
Page spread from a late 19th-century copy of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s 1860 The Marble Faun (published outside the United States as Transformation, or, The Romance of Monte Beni). A certain Lily L. Paine supplied this copy with its tipped-in photographic illustrations while in Rome in March 1891. This photograph faces the page in which Hawthorne recounts his heroine’s visit to the crypt of the church of the Capuchin order, Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini.
