About the Digital First Readings Edition

The First Readings edition of the Slavery and Justice Report features an interactive reading experience, an expanded set of historical documents, and an array of supplemental resources.

The original report (available on the site as a downloadable pdf) has been converted to dynamic, reflowable text that supports deep reader engagement with robust highlighting, annotating, and sharing tools. While the content has not been altered, the re-formatted text does include updated hyperlinks, consolidated captions and credit lines, and minor copyedits.

The set of eleven historical documents illustrated in the original report has been expanded to thirteen, the majority of which have been transcribed for the first time (diplomatic transcriptions retain all original spelling and grammatical features). This expanded set appears in an interactive Resource Collection that allows readers to search, share, zoom, and download both the historical documents and the transcriptions. Some resources (or Resource Collections) have been associated with specific passages of text. This is indicated by a gray cube within the text and a thumbnail of the resource in the left margin. Clicking on either will allow you to interact with the resource.

Maximize Your Experience

The First Readings edition of the Slavery and Justice Report is supported by Manifold Scholarship, an open-source publishing platform crafted with real users in mind. Manifold is responsive, fast, and intuitive on all your digital devices — smartphones, tablets, notebooks, and desktops. Control over fonts, type sizing, and margins make for a great reading experience. To begin taking advantage of all the tools offered by Manifold you must first create an account and sign in from the homepage.

To create a new account or sign in to an existing one, click the user icon in the top right corner. The system will prompt you for your account’s email and password. If you don’t have an account, click the “Need to sign up?” link, and you can then enter your name, email, and password.

Beside your personal account icon in the top right of the menu, you will see four icons: a notepad, an eye denoting visibility, Aa for appearance, and a spyglass for search:

  • The notepad displays a list of all the highlights and annotations you’ve made to a text in one place, allowing you to select them and be taken directly to the section of text in question.

  • The eye icon opens the visibility menu and allows you to selectively reveal or hide highlights, annotations, and resources.

  • The Aa takes you to a menu of formatting options to adjust how the text shows in the reader. You may enlarge the text, choose serif or sans serif font, invert the color (black on white or white on black text), and increase or decrease the margins.

  • The spyglass opens a search bar that allows you to search within the chapter, text, or project for words or passages of interest.

Using the Notification Settings, Manifold readers can have the system send either a daily or weekly email that summarizes any new texts or resources that have been added to the project. Notification Settings can be accessed and adjusted from the user dropdown in the upper righthand corner of the screen — or by clicking on the Notification Settings button at the bottom of the Edit Profile screen.
